Dr. Newall Published by Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Journal

A RESTROSPECITVE STUDY ON THE USE OF A LOWMOLECULAR-WEIGHT HEPARIN FOR THROMBOEMBOLISM PROPHYLAXIS IN LARGE-VOLUME LIPOSUCTION AND BODY CONTOURING PROCEDURES

Dr. German Newall, Dr. Amado Ruiz-Razura, Dr. Henry Mentz, Dr. Christopher Patronella, Dr Fracis Ibarra and Dr. Alberto Zarak. Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Journal, Volume 30, Number 1, January/February 2006

Dr. Newall was honored to have his research published in the distinguished Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Journal, the official journal of the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS).

This study was a retrospective study designed to evaluate the effectiveness of using low-molecular-weight heparin as a prophylaxis for preventing venous trhomboembolism and deep venous thrombosis (DVT) during recovery phase of large volume liposuction and/or multi-area body contouring procedures. Over 291 patients were studied over an 18 month period. The results show a 0% incidence of DVT and pulmonary embolisms among those patients who received the heparin prophylacticly. This publication represents the first report that describes the use of heparin in aesthetic surgery for high-risk patients. Dr. Newall is optimistic that this study and these results will change the postoperative regimen in high-risk aesthetic surgery cases and significantly improve the safety of these procedure to all patients in this category.
